Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (formerly the Miami Museum of Science) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Downtown Miami, Florida, US. The museum is dedicated to promoting public understanding and appreciation of science, technology, engineering, and math through interactive exhibits, educational programs, and research initiatives.


History

The museum first opened its doors in 1932 as the Miami Children's Museum. In 1950, the museum was renamed to the Miami Museum of Science. The museum moved to its current location in 1976. In 2013, the museum underwent a $275 million expansion and renovation project which added new exhibit galleries, an aquarium, a planetarium, and an outdoor science park. The expanded facility reopened to the public in 2017.


Exhibits and Attractions

The museum's galleries are designed to engage visitors of all ages in hands-on scientific exploration. Galleries include the Discovery Room, where children can experiment with a variety of materials; the Aquarium, which features over 500 species of marine life; the Planetarium, where visitors can take a journey through our solar system and beyond; and the Feathers to the Stars Gallery, which explores the process of evolution. The museum also offers educational programs for school groups, families, and adults.


Research Initiatives

The Frost Museum of Science is committed to furthering scientific knowledge through research initiatives. The museum houses a state-of-the-art research laboratory where scientists conduct studies on a variety of topics including coral reef ecology, ocean conservation, and climate change. The Frost Museum of Science is also home to the Center for Earth and Space Science Education, which provides professional development opportunities for educators and teacher training programs in STEM disciplines.
