The Bass

The Bass is a contemporary art museum in Miami Beach, Florida. It is located adjacent to the Miami Beach Convention Center and like many museums in the area, it focuses on modern and contemporary art. The museum was founded in 1964 by the City of Miami Beach as part of an effort to bring more cultural attractions to the city.

History

The museum is named after its founder, John C. Bass, who was a major force in the development of Miami Beach as an international tourist destination. Mr. Bass was a businessman and philanthropist who believed that art should be accessible to everyone.

In the early 1960s, Mr. Bass commissioned noted architect Edward Durell Stone to design a museum that would showcase the work of contemporary artists from around the world. The result was a sleek, modern building that quickly became a landmark on Miami Beach's Ocean Drive.

The Bass opened its doors to the public in 1964 with an exhibition of paintings by European and American artists. Over the years, the museum has presented countless exhibitions of both emerging and established artists. In addition to paintings, The Bass also showcases sculpture, photography, installations, and other forms of contemporary art.

The Bass is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors.

How To Visit

The Bass is located at 2100 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, Florida. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free for members and children under the age of 6. General admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, and $4 for children ages 6-12.
