Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a botanical garden located in Miami, Florida. The 83-acre (34 ha) garden is one of the premier tourist attractions in Miami-Dade County, and is open 365 days a year. Fairchild is an active participant in plant conservation efforts both in the United States and abroad, and is home to the National Palm Collection.


History

The Garden was founded in 1938 by Dr. David Fairchild, a plant explorer for the United States Department of Agriculture, and his wife, Marian. It is named after him. The original Garden site was purchased with money from the estate of Mrs. William J. Matheson, which Mr. Matheson had set aside for the study of tropical plants.


The Garden officially opened to the public in 1938. It has since become one of the premier tourist attractions in Miami-Dade County, and is open 365 days a year. Fairchild is an active participant in plant conservation efforts both in the United States and abroad, and is home to the National Palm Collection.


Collection

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has one of the world's largest collections of palms, with more than 7,000 specimens representing over 600 species. The Garden is also home to the National Palm Collection, which includes palms from all over the world. In addition to palms, the Garden's collection includes a wide variety of other tropical plants, including flowering trees, bamboo, and cacti.


The Fairchilds' work continues to be an important part of the Garden's mission, and their legacy is evident in the many unique and rare plant species that can be found here.


How To Visit

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Miami, Florida. The Garden is open 365 days a year from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Admission is $25 for adults, $18 for seniors (65+), $12 for children (6-12), and free for members and children 5 and under.
